Do-It-Yourself Feather Hair Extensions

One of my favorite trends popping up lately is feather hair extensions. Feather extensions add an edgy, playful vibe to your hairdo and can be pretty easily hidden in your hair (for those of you with office jobs). The cost to get these done in the salon can be expensive, however I’ve found the next best thing to salon extensions: do-it-yourself kits. At home kits are super easy and extremely affordable. I also found great step-by-step instructions at The Ambitious Procrastinator.

1. Pink 7 feather Hair Extensions, Etsy, $20. From Etsy shop Futska, these salon grade extensions with link clamp are a great deal for the price. With pinks, creams, whites, borwns, blacks, and grays, the feather variety offered is super versatile and with an installation video given on request, this is a perfect at home kit.
2. Feather Hair Extensions, Etsy, $25. For $25 you get 5 feathers and 5 Silicone crimp beads. All you have to do is get a pair of crimp pliers and you’ll be able to do these on your own.  
3. Feather Hair Clips, Etsy, $12. Hair clips are another option for adding feathers to your hair. These clips are reusable making them a funky item you can keep around for a long time.
4. Feather Hair Clips, Singer22, $57. Singer22 offers a hair clip with a great selection of feathers. This, again, offers an easy do-it-yourself method. 

Do-It-Yourself Jump Rope Necklace

Who would ever think that you can make a rope necklace out of jump rope? Well, I didn’t until I saw a great DIY post by Moosette awhile back. Apparently, Dollar Store Crafts did a post detailing this exact project back in December. I was so impressed I decided to try it myself.

Supplies

• Two jump ropes from the dollar store
  
• Two copper 1/2” plumping connectors and two 1/2” tube caps from Home Depot
  
• Four small magnets from Home Depot
  
• Glue gun

Do It Yourself – Gold Tassel Earrings

I have another DIY this week. This week’s inspiration came after I found a beautiful pair of Ben-Amun Tassel Earrings at Max&Chloe for $120. The look-a-like earrings are a pretty close second and with a cost of around $5, they can’t be beat! Surprisingly, these dangling earrings were also actually pretty easy to do.

 
Supplies:

• Gold earring base with three loops at bottom (can be found at Michaels craft store)
  
• Gold chain
  
• Gold jump rings
  
• Gold earring hooks
  
• Needle nose pliers
  
• Wire cutters

Step 1:
You’ll need to use the wire cutters to cut the chain into 2 1/2 inch long strands. You’ll need three 2 1/2 inch chains for each loop on the earring base. With three loops per earring base, that means you’ll need to cut 9 chains per earring, or 18 chains total. You’ll also need 6 jump rings per earring, or 12 jump rings total.

Step 2:
Use the needle nose pliers to pry open one of the jump rings. Attach three chains to the jump ring. Repeat this step 5 more times, attaching 3 chains to 5 more jump rings. You should end up with 6 sets of chained jump rings. You should also have 6 remaining jump rings left over that are not attached to chains.

Step 3:
Pry open one of the remaining jump rings that is not attached to a chain. Attach it to one of the jump rings with 3 chains attached. Then attach the open jump ring to the earring base and close. Repeat step 5 more times, twice more on the earring you are currently working on and 3 more times on the other earring.

Step 4:
Pry open earring hook loop and attach to top of earring base. Repeat with other earring. Viola! You now have yourself a beautiful pair of tassel earrings!

Do It Yourself - Peacock Feather Earrings

Recently, I have been lusting after a cute pair of peacock feather earrings I mentioned in my post Accessories Under $40. I started to think about how easy it would be to make these at home for a fraction of the cost. So I did just that and headed over to my local craft store to gather all the materials. (I ended up getting a few sets of feathers as they were on sale).

What You'll Need:

• Beads
• Peacock Feathers (or any feathers of your choice)
• Brass Wire
• Earring Hooks
• Brass Eye Pins (I had originally bought head pins which didn't work that well)
• Wire Cutters
• Needle Nose Pliers

Since I found a lot of the items on sale at Jo-Anne Fabrics and I already had the beads, pliers, and wire cutters, the total was only around $7. Not to mentioned I have supplies for three other sets of feather earrings!

Step 1:
First, you'll need to trim the feathers around the base and if using peacock feathers trim the extra feathers around the eye design so that there is about a quarter to a half inch of extra feather below the eye design. See the before and after photos below.

Step 2:
Create a small loop with the brass wire.

Step 3:
Hold the wire in place next to the feather's base with the needle nose pliers.

Step 4:
Start wrapping the wire around the base so that about a 1/4 inch to a 1/2 inch of the feather is covered with wire. Clip extra wire with the wire cutters.

 

Step 5:
Do the same with the other feather. Your finished looped feathers should look the picture below:

Step 6:
Loop a bead into the brass eye pin and hook the eye pin into the loop created on the feather. Use the wire cutter to cut down the extra length on the other end of the eye pin. Create a loop on this straight side of the pin using the needle nose pliers. Repeat with the other feather.

 

Step 7:

Next, repeat the previous step with additional beads until desired number of beads and length is achieved. Finish by attaching the last loop to the earring hooks. Trim feathers additionally if desired. Viola, you're finished!
